▶ About This Opportunity

Title: Director of Food Product Development, Commercialization, and Technical Services

Position Overview: The Director of Fresh Foods Product Development and Technical Services provides strategic and tactical leadership in all aspects of the product development stage gate process from concept to store roll out.  In addition to delivering high quality, craveable fresh food innovation, new platforms and continuously improved core products for the 7-Eleven store system, this role also has oversight to the consumer insights/sensory program, the food specification program, and the test kitchen.  This role requires a blend of technical expertise, creativity, project management, business acumen, cross functional collaboration, and leadership skills to drive innovation, quality, and commercial success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive Innovation, Continuous Improvement and New Platform Development of Fresh Foods and Restaurants: Provide strategic thought leadership and tactical process optimization for the Stage Gate Product Development Process, setting priorities and aligning team on best practices/SOPs for development, mitigating risks and clearing obstacles through communication and alignment with larger merchandising team.   Develop and refine menu strategy based on emerging trends and customer insights.  Ensures development is executed with excellence and meets consumer, business, food safety/regulatory and operational goals as aligned with the cross functional team.   Work cross functionally with the merchandising team to align strategies and priorities.
  • Develop High Functioning Teams. Hire, train, direct and coach food development professionals though individual and team performance, career development and mentorship in addition to fostering a culture of people first and winning together.  Optimize resources by challenging the status quo and exploring process improvements to enhance team effectiveness and efficiency.  Set clear, achievable, and measurable stretch goals for the team.
  • Provide Food Science Technical Services: Provide food science related technical expertise, thought leadership and hands on work to resolve technical hurdles, push suppliers to higher thinking and enable breakthrough innovation. Scout and provide a POV on emerging food technologies/novel ingredients for future product development use and application to the Fresh Foods program. 
  • Understand and develop products that delight the Customer: Champion the voice of the consumer by ensuring the front end of development is resourced and stage gated. Work closely with market research to understand enterprise resources and develop strategies and methodologies to efficiently mine and utilize for Fresh Foods Product Development.  Oversight of the sensory program (both internal and external hedonic and difference testing) to drive product development built upon customer feedback.  Primary responsibility for sensory program data analysis and interpretation. 
  • Champion Specification and Product Documentation Management: Oversight and strategic vision for the specification system which is in transition to TraceGains.  Work closely with QA, Sourcing, and IT to ensure the set-up is efficient and user friendly so that every product is documented prior to release to the stores.   Work towards implementing across the Enterprise for all items.
  • Drive Test Kitchen Optimization: Provide oversight, budgeting, and strategic vision for the Test Kitchen, ensuring the area is efficient and effective at supporting the needs of product developers and suppliers.  As 7-Eleven expands through M&A, identify opportunities to change and make more efficient use of space and equipment. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Food Engineering, or a related field; advanced degree preferred. Strong technical knowledge of food science, ingredient functionality, food processing, and quality assurance.  Strong strategic thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • 10 + years of progressive experience in food product development, commercialization, and technical services, including leadership roles and managing a team. Proven track record of successfully launching new food products from concept to commercialization in QSR and/or CPG.
  • Strategic and execution mindset, able to be a hands-on leader with his/her team yet give a vision of where the team should be headed. Ensures team is working on the right priorities in alignment with business partners.  
  • Experience managing cross-functional teams and driving collaboration across departments. Strong leadership and people management skills, with the ability to inspire, mentor, and develop team members.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and negotiate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strategic thinker with a results-oriented mindset and a passion for innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities effectively.
